This page is a work in progress and its purpose is to try to establish the connection between Heaphy and the Tottenham family. An early marriage connection between 1660 to 1680 between Heaphy and Tottenham or Atkin family, puts John Heaphy, son of Daniel Heaphy as a cousin of Edward Tottenham, taken from the will extracts of Edward Tottenham (1659 – 1711) provides the name of Edward’s cousin as John Heaphy. Since the first two members of the Tottenham family to arrive in Ireland were Barnabas and John, and there are no further known Tottenham members to have existed up to this point, it could be that that the Heaphy connection came through on the marriage connections with Tynte or Atkin.
Further update [2026] on the Jackson family of Glenbeg and Ballyduff, Waterford, shows that a Jane Tottenham, dau of unknown Tottenham, married John Jackson (b.c1577, of Ballyduff, Lismore) in about 1610. John and Jane had a son, Thomas Jackson, born c1612, who married Anne King in 1634. If this is the case, it opens up that Tottenham had arrived earlier in Ireland before Barnabus and John.
This new evidence gives the possiblity that other Tottenham members had arrived, but were undocumented in Ireland. Alternatively, the reference to "cousin" in the 17th century could also relate to a wider circle of people, from being a relation to a close personal friend to a valuable member of the household.
Barnabas Hancock Tottenham is ruled out, as his wife, Martha King Harman is recorded to have had no children with Barnabas, who died within 2 years of his marriage. Therefore it leaves Tynte and Atkin. Below is the investigation for Atkin or at times referred to as Atkins, originated in England and moved to Ireland, Cork and Wexford. Investigation into Tynte or Tent will follow, however from the Atkin family members below, born around 1630 - 1640, the same time as Daniel Heaphy, there are 5 unaccounted for: Anne, Margaret, Catherine, John and Elizabeth Atkin.
ATKIN

Is Jane Rugge connected to (Lady) Jane Rugge (1475 - 1571 - dau. of Richard Rugge (1445 - 1536) and Margaret Moreton, who married William Molyneux, (Sir William Molyneux, Lord of Sefton and Clifton) Lancashsire, England? iii Catherine Atkin (1619 - 1661), married John Tottenham (1633 - 1700), of Tottenham Green, Wexford, son of John Tottenham (b.1609, son of John Thomas Tottenham & Agnes Mustell) & Margaret Tynte (b. 1615) and brother to Edward Tottenham (1635 - 1702).
The Tottenham's (Totnam) originally from Barrington, Cambridge, England, were Quakers (Quaker references) and first settled in Youghal, before moving to Wexford. It was Barnabas Hancock, born 1602, son of Beatrice Tottenham of Barrington, Cambridge (dau of James Tottenham and Agnes Titchmarsh), and John Hancock, who first moved to Ireland, acquiring an estate of Ballyduff, Lismore, Co. Waterford (Ref: Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland). The estate was Glenbeg, with Glenbeg house being built in 1625, on the lands formerly owned by Sir Walter Raleigh, which were later bought by Sir Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork. Glenbeg house was built as a fortified Jacobean Manor house by Barnabus Tottenham, a retainer for the Earl of Cork (Ref: History of Glenbeg House). Barnabas adopted the name of Tottenham and married Martha (otherwise King of Cork) Harman (widow) in 1630. Barnabas died on the 16 July 1632. (Lismore, Co. Waterford is where Daniel Heaphy is recorded in 1660). Betham Genealogical Abstracts as follows for his will details:
Barnabas Tottenham Als Hancock of Ballinduff in Co. Waterford, Esq. 13 July 1632. Nephew John Hancock, niece Anne Hancock. Brother in law Thos Salisbury and Thos Pompet. Cousin John Atkin, brother John Walley Esq. Kinsman John Tottenham, daughter in-law Martha Harman. Wife, Martha.
Note: Barnabas mentions John Atkin, as his cousin? He must be referring to John Atkin, one of the first of the Atkin's to arrive in Ireland. John married Jane Rugge, born Bilbrook, Yorkshire, England, (1592 - 1675) in 1614. John and Jane lived at Polemore, Youghal, Cork. It is their daughter, Catherine Atkin that married John Tottenham circa 1655, well after the death of Barnabus Hancock Tottenham. So what is the relationship between Barnabas and John Atkin - or is that John Atkin was a personal or valued friend?
According to Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, the widow of Barnabas married again to Sir Erasmuas Borrowes (B. Abt 1675 - D. Abt 1650) 1st Baronet, of Giltown, Co. Kildare on the 13 December 1632, giving Martha's address was Ballinduff (Ballyduff) Waterford. According to Betham Prerogative Marriage Licence records, the marriage record is recorded as follows (Her name is still referenced as Martha in the Court of Chancery Bills):
Burrows, Erasmus, Co. Kildare, and Hancock, als Collengam of Dallinduff, Co. Waterford, widow, lady, dated 13 Dec 1632
Beatrice Tottenham's cousin, John Tottenham (D.1611) of Barrington, Cambridge, married Agnes Mustell and had two sons: John (B.1609) and Humphrey Tottenham (1611 - 1616). John, the eldest settled was baptised 14 June 1609, and he settled in Youghal, Cork, and is the cousin of Barnabas Hancock Tottenham. John Tottenham married Margaret Tynte, in 1632, the daughter of Sir Robert Tynte, Knight of Ballycrenan, Cork and had two sons: John and Edward Tottenham. John Tottenham (1633 - 1700), the eldest son, of Tottenham Green, an estate he purchased in Co. Wexford, from Charles Collins, cira 1670. John married Catherine Atkin, his cousin and daughter of John Atkin of Polemore, Co. Cork.
Following Catherine (Atkin) Tottenham's death in 1661, John marries Anne Clarke, daughter of John and Elizabeth Clarke, England. Anne Clarke moved to Ireland on 02 March 1658 (Ref: Quaker). John and Anne would have three children, with none of them reaching adulthood - John Tottenham (1673 - 1675), Anne Tottenham (1676 - 1680) and John Tottenham (1678 - 1680).
The children of Catherine Atkin and John Tottenham were:
John Tottenham (1657 - 1667)
Edward Tottenham (1659 - 1712) the only surving son of John Tottenham, married (First) Elizabeth Hayman, (dau of Samuel Hayman, Youghal, Cork and Elizabeth Atkin), with son Charles Tottenham (1685 - 1758), who marries Elinor Cliffe (1696 - 1745, dau of John Cliffe, Wexford, Tory, Irish House of Commons). It is through Charles Tottenham, the family intermarry with the Loftus family of Loftus Hall, Wexford. Edward married (Second) Jane Hudle (B. 1671) and had another son, John Tottenham (1693 - 1693). It is unclear who Jane Hudle is, as there appears to be very little on the surname Hudle, which is probably Huddle. There is a Charles Huddle, merchant of Wexford referenced in 1681.
It is from Edward Tottenham's will in 1711, we see the following:
1712 Will Abstract: Wife Jane - son Charles - cousin John Heaphy, son of Daniel Heaphy, cousins Robert Pears - and Margaret Peare, wife of Robert Pears - sister Mrs. Anne Broome - Aunt Mrs. Mary Brelsford - uncles Edward Tottenham - and Walter Atkin - Mary Atkin, dau of said Walter Atkin - Uncle John Breslford - Catherine Gee sister of same - Francis Brelsford, brother of John Breslford - cousin John Tottenham - Edward, Elizabeth, brother and sister of same - mother in law Mrs. Anne Tottenham - brothers in law John Hayman of Polemore and Samuel Hayman Esqs - sisters in law Mrs Jane Lucase and Mrs Frances Hayman - cousin Lewis Parker - Barbara Bishop - and Mary Powell - cousin John Thomas Atkin son of Walter Atkin of Roxboro, Co Cork, Gent - Barbara Parker daughter of said Lewis Parker - Aunt Jane Fyne.
William Tottenham (1661 - 1661)
The cousins, John, Edward and Elizabeth Tottenham mentioned by Edward in 1712, refer to the children of Edward Tottenham (1635 - 1702), his uncle and brother of John Tottenham. Edward (the uncle) married first to Elizabeth (unknown) who died young and Edward married secondly to Sarah Spencer and had the three children as mentioned (Elizabeth, Edward and Rev. John Tottenham). Is this Sarah Spencer related to Jane Spencer who married William Atkin in 1696?
The following are related to Edward Tottenham, however, it is unclear of the connection?:
Cousins: John Heaphy and Barbara Bishop. Aunt: Jane Fyne.
iv Mary Atkin (B.1620 - D. After 1705) Married John Brelsford, born abt 1620 and died 1671, brother to Samuel, Francis, and Frances (Gee) Brelsford. Children:
John Brelsford
v Margaret Atkin married Jerome Parker (Ref in John Atkin's Will, 1705), with children:
Walter Parker, referenced in his grandfather's Will, 1705 - John Atkin.
Robert Parker, referenced in his grandfather's Will, 1705 - John Atkin.
Lewis Parker, son of Jerome Parker, whose daughter Barbara Parker (M. Bishop) is mentioned in Edward Tottenham's will abstract. Referenced in his grandfather's Will, 1705 - John Atkin.
Margaret Parker, married Robert Peare in 1680, with children: Robert Peare and Anne Peare (Broome - Possible name is Francis Broome, ref ROD with Edward Tottenham, 1710), all four mentioned by Edward Tottenham in 1712.
Is there another sister - Mary Parker, who married Richard Powell in 1681?
The majority of research below on the Blennerhassett family has originally been carried out by another researcher.
The Blennerhassett family is an English and Anglo-Irish noble family which has been involved in the politics of Britain and Ireland since the fourteenth century. A powerfully well connected family, members have been involved in all aspects of society. The vast majority of the research below is taken from existing study of the family and from such books as, Selections From Old Kerry Records, or from research notes, Estated Gentlemen of Kerry, principally from the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Eras, their Births, Marriages, and Obituaries, from the Contemporary Press. Through my own research, I have added more information on branches. Below is a summary of some of the family members.
Research begins with Thomas Blennerhassett born before 1500 and died after 1522, of Carlisle, Cumberland, England, whose son, John Blennerhassett (B. Abt. 1517 D.1578), of Carlisle, Cumberland, England, married Janet de Martindale, born 1534. Their son, Thomas Blennerhassett (B. Abt. 1547 D.1611), born Flimby, Cumbria, England, married Mary Heydon (B.1642) in 1654. Thomas and Mary had the following children:
Thomas (1565-1654), John (1560 - 1677), Robert (1565 - 1654), Blennerhassett (B.1568), Thomas (1577 - 1590), Thomas (1590 - 1590), and William (D.1621)
Of the above children, it was John and Robert, who moved from Cumbria, England to Ireland. The following lineage will follow Robert Blennerhassett, born Flimby, Cumbria England and moved to Kerry, Ireland. He was MP for Tralee and was occupying Ballysheedy and Ballycarty Castles. Robert married Elizabeth Conway, daughter of Jenkin Conway & Mary Herbert, of Castle Conway. Elizabeth was the sister of Jenkin (m. Avice Dalton) and Alice Conway (m. Edward Roe). Robert and Elizabeth had the following children:
1 John Blennerhassett (1593 - 1676) born Castle Conway, he married Martha Lynne and had the following children:

Following John's death in 1709, Margaret married David John Barry, son of Richard Barry, 2nd Earl of Barrymore with no further children. John Blennerhassett and Margaret Crosbie had several children with one of their sons being, Colonel John Blennerhassett (1691-1775) who made a family pact Maurice Crosbie of Ardfert and Arthur Denny of Tralee, partitioning the county representation among the three families (Ref: Irish Historic Houses). Colonel John's son, John Blennerhassett (1715 - 1763) married Anne Crosbie, daughter of William Crosbie of Tubrid, County Kerry. Another son of John and Margaret, was William Blennerhassett (1705 - 1785), married Mary, daughter of John Morley, Mayor of Cork.

"The several persons who remain indebted to Blennerhassett Grove Esq., deceased, are requested in such debts to Mr. Hamilton Baillie, of King Street, St. Stephen's Green"
Hamilton Baillie of the Ballie Family of Dublin & Down, was the wife of Sarah, and brother to James Baillie and Mrs. Trompson. It is unclear if his daughter is Anne, who married Clarke, and later married Michael Heaphy, in June 1777, St. Mary's Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Michael Heaphy is yet unidentified (2026), however both Hamilton and his wife Sarah were witnesses to the wedding of Michael and Anne, along with both Michael and Anne being mentioned in the will of Hamilton Baillie in 1785 - is Michael connected to Daniel Heaphy & Rachel Blennerhassett?
Alice Blennerhassett.

Catherine Evans & Sir Richard Coxe
John Evans & Elizabeth Tubbs in 1725, daughter of William Tubbs, gent, Knockany, Limerick. Diocese of Cork & Ross.
Research being carried on the Evans family on this site is to focus on the Evans family of Kilkeedy, Limerick and the Evans - Vokes/Green/Wall connection.
A John Evans, born circa 1700, and died 1779/80. John Evans, is possibly related related to Simon and Elinor Evans. Simon is the brother of Elinor Evans (M. Taylor) & Catherine Evans, who married George Vokes. John's marriage is very likely with Elizabeth Tubbs, daughter of William Tubbs, Knockany, Limerick in 1725, ref, ROD, Memorial 34788 with a pre-marriage settlement and an agreement of lands at Cappananagh to John Evans, dated May 1725. Elizabeth is the brother of William Tubbs, of Knockany, Limerick, who married (First) to Judith Allen, in 1726 and (Second) to Elizabeth Tiernan in 1728 (Ref, Early Irish Marriage Index). There is a marriage between Catherine Tubbs, possible Aunt of Elizabeth, to Edward Apjohn in 1711, Cashel & Emly marriage registers.
Note, there is a Court of Chancery/Exchequer Records for
1732, 1733, & 1752, with John Heaphy (Limerick/Kerry Line) and William Tubbs
1752 with James Apjohn, John Heaphy, Raymond Evans, Standish and William Tubbs.
John Evans had the following children:
i Raymond Evans, born 1725 (Ref: Cork Merchantile Chronicle). Raymond married Miss Vokes, daughter of Thomas Vokes (D.1783/5). Raymond's wife, Mrs Vokes Evans, died in December 1816, at the house of her son, John Evans, Mallow, relict of the late Raymond Evans, of Limerick, Patentee Clerk of the Crown for Limerick (Ref: Ffolliott Newspapers). Raymond Evans, died in November 1805, aged 80, later of Mallow (Ref: Ffolliott Newspapers). Court of Exchequer records for Raymond Evans, connected to John Heaphy (as above) and Tubbs is as follows:
4 Dec 1752 [Court of Exchequer]
Def: Bryn O’Donnell, Standish Tubbs, William Tubbs, William Slatterford, Raymond Evans, Robert Powell, John Heaphy, Michael Rice and Edmond Butler
Pet: James Apjohn
Known children of Raymond and his wife are:
John Evans, who married Ann (Mary Ann Lacy? in 1781) and had the following known child:
Raymond Evans, baptised 1792, Mallow.
ii Mary Evans, who married Roger Finch.
iii Ann Evans, who married Francis Swayne in 1747, Cashel & Emly Diocese. Francis Swayne, gent of Co. Galway (Cork Origin), died in 1758. According to Betham Genealogical Abstracts, Francis Swayne is the uncle of Francis Green of Craig, Limerick [See Green Family] as his sister, Mary, married John Green, Limerick, in 1727. There is an earlier marriage record for Francis Swayne and Isabella Crofts in 1711, Cork, which might suggest that Francis was married before his marriage to Ann Evans, or alternatively, the first marriage relates to the father of Francis Swayne. The Crofts were connected to the Taylors and Swayne families, through the marriage of Elizabeth Crofts, daughter of Christopher Crofts (Alderman - D.1712) and Mary Stephenson with Anselm Taylor of Limerick. These Taylors are very likely related to Richard Taylor, who married Elinor Evans, sister of Catherine and Simon.
Ann and Francis Swayne had the following children, with Anne and Francis Swayne both referenced in the Court of Chancery Records along with their grandfather John Evans, their cousin, Francis Green of Craige, Robert Holmes (M. Mary Green, niece of F Swayne) and Cole Maxwell (M. Elizabeth Green, nice of F Swayne) and William Crofts.
Anne Swayne, the eldest daughter
Elizabeth Swayne, the second daughter
Francis Swayne, the only son, born 1760 and died 1788.
Memorials for Swayne - Box Tomb. Here lies Francis Swayne Esq, who departed this life on the 16 day of November 1788, aged 28 years. Universally loved and lamented. Tomb is erected to his ever dear memory by his affectionate sister, Ann Swayne.
Note: A John Evans, born circa 1765, of Toryhill, Limerick, married Miss Swayne in May 1789 - is this Anne or Elizabeth?
iv Richard Evans
v Margaret Evans, who married John Cusack.
v George Evans
vi William Evans
viii Simon Evans
Note:
Nathaniel Evans, who married Bridget Green, daughter of Nicholas Green, of Carker, Doneraile, Cork, in 1725. It was through this marriage that allowed the Evans family inherited property in Cork, notably, Doneraile. [See Green Family] Nathaniel and Bridget's children:
i Nicholas Green Evans, born 1730, Carker House, Doneraile, Cork, who married Hannah Roberts in 1756 with son, Nicholas Green Evans married Anne Westropp, in 1790.
ii Amelia Evans, married Henry Bowerman, in 1748. A pre-marriage agreement existed, ref: ROD, Memorial 92960. Ringrose Bowerman of Clare, was a witness to the memorial, with Christopher Crofts, Cork and John Ryves Nettles, witnesses to the deed.
iii Roberts Evans, Major General
iv Henry Evans, Vice Admiral for the Royal Navy, he married Elizabeth Nash in 1801.
John Evans, of Limerick is referenced in the pre-marriage settlement between Elinor Wall and Conway Heaphy, eldest son and heir of Robert Heaphy & Mary Ann Conway, in 1791. This John Evans, has some connection to the Wall family. In the Court of Exchequer records for 1782 - 84, there is a reference to John Evans, and Atty or Anastasia Wall, husband of Barnaby Wall of Rathkeale. Is Anastasia of the Evans family and is what relation would she be to Elinor Wall? John Evans makes several Court of Chancery appearances with Conway Heaphy, Mary Ann Heaphy Keating and Elinor Wall Heaphy Hasset in 1817/1818. There is also reference to Peter Heaphy in the 1782-84 court records, however it is unknown who he is.

Edward Evans, born cira 1770, married Catherine Ryan, in 1793, COI, St. John's Limerick. Known child of Edward and Catherine:
i Edward Evans, born about 1805, died 1880. Edward of Rivermount, Clarina, married (unknown) and had the following known children:

Catherine Anne Evans, born 1864, Clarina.
Eliza Evans, of Rivermount, Kilkeedy, married George Mack, R.I.C. Constable, and son of James Mack in 1858, with witnesses: Edmond/Edward Evans and John Young.
Jane Evans, married in 1869, COI, Kilkeedy to Edward Adamson, of Rivermount, Kilkeedy, and son of Samuel Adamson, and grandson of Richard Asamson and Honora Young. Witnesses: Charles & Jane Shier.
The following two Evan members could possible be brothers/sons of Edward Evans, as both were present in Kilkeedy in 1851, along with the mention of both Edwards, for the parliamentary return of the anti-Papal Petitions in the Country of Limerick - in favour of the penal aggression bill [See Newspapers]:

There appears to be no more baptismal records following 1720. No burial dates were found for William and John, so it is possible, one or both had a family in Limerick, which Mary, Elicia & William Holliday below are a member of.
Other disconnected members:
William Holland, married Catherine Green in 1701, diocese of Cork & Ross. It is possible, this William is a brother to Charles Holliday who married Sarah White, Limerick.

Elias Horan, referenced in his grandfather's Will, Ringrose Drew, dated 1785.
Note: There appears to have been a connection/relationship between the Duhigg family and the O'Brien family - Brien O'Brien of Boskill, Limerick, was the brother of Margaret, who married John Heaphy in 1742. A Bartholomew Duhigg, was a witness to the marriage agreement deed for Margaret's first marriage to Thomas McNamara in 1727. It is unclear if Mary, who married Matthew Duhigg, brother of Bartholomew Duhigg is O'Brien or Burke. Margaret O'Brien's sister, Honora O'Brien, married Cornelius Chlancy/Clanchy (son of Henry Chlancy) in 1728 - their granddaughter, Mary Clancy, would marry Matthew Duhigg in 1784 (Ref: ROD). See Heaphy of Limerick & Kerry It is unclear currently if it was John Heaphy who was first married to Miss Horan, or perhaps a brother, for example Peter or Matthew Heaphy, who are both referenced to the Rathkeale area in the early to mid 18th century.
Research on the family is still being compiled. Overview below of the case relating to the lands at Newcastle, Limerick.

This branch of the O'Brien family is of Boskill area of Limerick with connections to Tipperary and Killaloe, Clare. Research continues on this line. It begins Brien, John, Denis, and Cornelius O'Brien.
