The Heaphy family lived in the Kilkeedy, Clarina region of County Limerick for 130+ years. The family were Church of Ireland, however through certain marriages, many changed to RC. The origins are still in research.
Heaphy family of Kilkeedy, Clarina, Limerick
John Heaphy, Land Steward, to Lord Clarina, Elm Park. (B. Abt 1776 - 1851) Aged 75, Corcamore, Clarina (Death registered COI, Kilkeedy). It is very likely that John moved into the Clarina, area and somehow was associated with the Massy family (Lord Clarina). There is no evidence of any other Heaphy within the area, only of John's family. The closest Heaphy, was James Heaphy (Cooper), of Adare and no connection has been found between them. There are earlier Heaphy connections to the original branch of the Massy family, of Duntrileague, Co. Limerick in the early 1700s, a John and Daniel Heaphy (See Waterford Family). It is possible that when the Massy line split and moved to Elm Park, Clarina, that John moved with them.
John Heaphy's first marriage is possibly with Frances Green. There is a recorded marriage in St. Munchins, COI, Limerick, dated 15 Sep 1799 (ffolliott parish registers), between John Heaphy and Frances Green. She may be, although not yet confirmed, the daughter of Francis Green Esq, of Graige, Limerick, however that Frances Green had a marriage to Lieut. James Cockburne in 1791, however, research is still ongoing. See more on the Green Family of Limerick.
If Frances Green, born 1773, is the wife of John Heaphy, this would have made the Baron, Lord Clarina, the uncle in-law of John Heaphy's children, for Frances's brother, John Green, married the Honourable Catherine Massey, sister of Lord Clarina in 1793. This connection to the Massey family might also provide evidence for John's position as steward to the Massey family.
It can also be noted that Henry was an important name for John and Frances (Fanny), and additionally, the name Samuel, as it has appeared in five generations following. Has Samuel been introduced from the marriage? John Heaphy is referenced in the Valuation Office Books of 1847 (House free of Rent) Limerick, and in the Griffith Valuation of 1850. Known children of John and Fanny Heaphy:
Eleanor (Helen), Henry, Eyre, John, Elizabeth (Eliza), Samuel, Mary and Henry.
John Heaphy's second marriage was to Mary (Unknown) (1803 - 1889) possibly between 1828 - 1830. On Mary's death in 1889, her daughter, Amelia Heaphy Hurley was present. Known children of John and Mary Heaphy:
George Henry, Joseph, James, Rebecca and Amelia.
Children of John Heaphy (1776 - 1851)
1 (Daughter) Helen (Eleanor) Heaphy (V) Daughter of John and Frances Heaphy and born about 1801. Helen Heaphy at the age of about 20, was baptised as a Catholic on the 10.01.1821, in Lurriga (Kilkeedy). On the same page of the Catholic register, there are four entries, where adults were baptised as Catholic, including a Marian (Mary) Green and Mary Cronin, who were also witnesses to Helen Heaphy's baptism.
A Mary Green married Michael Hogan, on the 28 July 1809 in Lurriga, RC (Patrickswell/Ballybrown) in 1808 and a witness to the wedding was John Heaphy. Is this John Heaphy, father of Helen, possible husband of Frances Green, whose marriage is recorded in 1799, St. Munchins, COI, Limerick City?
Helen Heaphy married Michael Drew in December 1821 at Lurriga/Ballybrown, RC, Co. Limerick. Witnesses: Mary Kiely and William Kerrikan (husband of Catherine Drew, marriage 1818, Lurriga). It is unknown at present, what relation Michael Drew might be to the Drew family of Drewscourt Limerick.

2 (Son) Henry Heaphy (V) Son of John and Frances Heaphy. Born 03.03.1805 and baptised on 10.04.1805, Kilkeedy, COI Limerick. Mother's name is listed as Fanny. Died before 1819.
3 (Son) Eyre Heaphy (V) Son of John and Frances Heaphy. (B. 1806 - D. 1891) Kilkeedy, COI, Limerick. It is unknown if Eyre is the eldest or second eldest son of John, as no date of birth has been found. The age of 85 years is recorded on his death cert in 1891, however this may not be accurate. If he were the eldest son, he probably was born in 1803/04. It is known from the Juries (Ireland) Act, the General List of Jurors of 1882, it was noted, Eyre Heaphy of Newtown, is exempt as he is over 65 years of age.
The origin of Eyre's name has always believed to have been introduced into the family from an earlier marriage connection, however it is also plausible, that he was named after 1st Baron, Lord Clarina, Eyre Massey, who died in 1804.
Eyre was a steward & gardener to Lord Clarina, Elm Park, taking on the position from his father. He also worked as an agriculturalist, providing guidance to landlords on land improvements and land valuations for the Land Commission Agency. He was a land owner in Newtown, Kilrush and a judge for the West Clare Agricultural Society. Eyre won numerous prizes with the Limerick Horticultural Society throughout the 1840s and he was also a member of the horticultural committee. He is also referenced in the Tithe Applotment Books, in 1832, and in Griffith Valuation, in 1855.
Eyre married (First) Harriet Vokes (1827 - 1852) daughter of Thomas Vokes Esq (B. 1787, son of Andrew Vokes Esq, B. 1752, and Elizabeth Wilson of Cragbeg Estate, Limerick - with suggested connections to the De Vaux of France) and Mary Delmege (French Delmege Family) of Rathkeale, Limerick on the 08.01.1848, St. Michael's COI, Limerick City. [See Vokes Family Page].

Eyre moved into the most western house on Newtown Estate, built in the 18th century, probably between 1760s to 1780s. The house is in existence in the 1787 Grand Jury Maps. The Brew family of Newtown would have been in ownership of the house, through Francis and James Brew and later Burton Brew. Following Burton Brew's death in 1800, the lands of Newtown West along with the house were leased to William Pilkington who lived in the house from 1800 to 1816 until Jonathon Brew married Abigail Pilkington. Jonathon and his family lived in the house from 1816 to 1853 until the house and part of lands of Newtown West were given through the union of marriage between Eyre Heaphy and Jane Brew. The house and lands still remain in the Heaphy family today [2024]. Children of Eyre and Jane: [Read Feature on Eyre Heaphy]
