Much of research below on the Brew family has originally been carried out by other researchers, and in part information is directly from the Brew family, along with my own research.
The Brew family were an English family that arrived in Ireland in around 1628. There are several different Brew branches, that probably have a common connection, and below are those associated with Co. Clare. This page looks at the following:
Brew of Ennis, & Clonkerry, Labasheedy, Co. Clare, associated with Richmond House & Applevale, Corofin and Leadmore House & Clonderalaw, Kilrush, Co. Clare.
Brew of Kilferagh, Newtown (Newtown House), & Clarefield, Kilrush, Co. Clare
Brew of Carnanes, Kilrush, Co. Clare
Brew of Parknamoney, Kilrush, Co. Clare
1 - Brew of Ennis, & Clonkerry, Labasheedy, Co. Clare
Begins with Richard Brew being the earliest Brew member to have records associated with County Clare. It is believed that Richard, is the father of brothers, Tomkins, Richard, & John Brew, born circa 1715 - 1725. There is also a George Brew, who may also be a son or brother/cousin to Richard.
1 Richard Brew, born c1695, of Ennis, Brewer/Vintner with Court of Exchequer Records dating from 1726. According to Brew history and registry of Brew, Richard married Ellinor O'Brien (c1700 - 1756), only child of Turlogh O'Brien and Mary Blake of Cahincrocane, Co. Galway. Richard and Ellinor are suggested to be the parents of:
Tomkins Brew, Richard Brew, & John Brew, of Clare, as detailed below. It is unclear if George Brew, Gaoler, of Ennis is also a brother/cousin.
Reference to Richard Brew and his wife, Ellinor in the Crossle Genealogical Abstracts, where Turlogh O'Brien had died, and administration granted to Ellinor Brew, otherwise, O'Brien, the daughter, next of kin to the deceased, and wife of Richard Brew of Ennis, brewer, dated 07 January 1741.
Brews as follows:
(Unknown Relation) George Brew, born c1700, Gaoler (Prison Officer), Ennis. George is referenced in Crossle Genealogical Abstracts in Reg. of Deeds, dated 07 June 1725, as follows:
By Thomas Whittington, dated 12 February 1725, whereby George Brew of Ennis, Goaler, demised to Thomas Whittington, also of Ennis, Chandler, the sixth part of the lands and farm, Braighfaugh (Breaghva/Breaffa), in common and in a ample manner as same was formerly held by James Magher deceased, situated in the parish of Kilrush, Co. Clare. To hold for Whittington for the lives of said George Brew and of Michael Brew and Francis Brew and survivor of them from date here of at £2 yearly rent.
(Son) Tomkins Brew born c1725, of Dunmore Co. Clare, died 1756. Brother to Richard Brew, vintner, Ennis. There must be a marriage connection related to Brew and Tomkins, for the name to be introduced into the family. Tomkins married Jane Chartres (D. 1802), daughter of John Chartres of Clonderalaw, Co. Clare. Children as follows taken from the Adams of Killoe and Willbrook, Clare, family tree:
i Chartres Brew born 1756 of Prospect, Kilmurray, Co. Clare and later of Applevale, Corofin. Died 1819, aged 63 (Ref: Memorials of the Dead). Married Rebecca Adams (1764 - 1802), eldest daughter and co-heiress of Charles Adams and Alice, his wife, in Killaloe on the 07.02.1782. Information as follows from Landed Estates, University of Galway:
An agreement dated 1762 refers to Richard Brew of Donmore [Doonmore?] and to his deceased brother Tomkins Brew, who appears to have married Jane Chartres of Limerick. They had a son named Chartres Brew. This agreement concerned the lands of Moyarta. In 1782 Chartres Brew of Prospect married Rebecca daughter of Charles Adams of Killoe. Another Brew/Adams marriage took place in 1786 between Rebecca's sister Alice and Richard Brew of Tullycrine.
By the time of Griffith's Valuation the representaives of Tomkins Brew held land in the parish of Kilnamona, barony of Inchiquin. Tomkins Brew was married to Jane Smith, half sister of Lady Charlotte O'Brien.

The research on the Green family is in an attempt to discover who Frances Green is that married John Heaphy, in 1799, St. Munchins, COI, Limerick.
The Green family have a long established history in Ireland and Limerick, with the family having had a powerful influence on the region. Godfrey Green (1620 - 1682, died Waterford), born Kilmanahan Castle, Co. Waterford, son of Capt. John Green and Katherine Hodges, was granted 541 acres at Mooretown-Keating, Knocknangle and Rathmore, barony of Iffa and Offa, county Tipperary (Ref: Greene - Landed Estates), in 1678, to hold for the use of his children: daughters: Susannah, Hannah, Bridget, Mary and Deborah; sons: Thomas, Rodulfus, Robert, Gilbert, Godfrey, Samuel, and John. He was married twice, with his second wife being, Frances (M.1645, Limerick), daughter of Robert Cox of Bruff, county Limerick .
In Limerick, the Green family is associated with:
Ballymacreese, near Cahirconclish (Captain Abraham Green - Henry Green)
Graige, Patrickswell, near Clarina (Captain Thomas Green - John Green)
Old Abbey, Shanagolden (Captain Godfrey Green - Captain John Green)
The Green lines of Limerick are being developed gradually.
BALLYMACREECE, LIMERICK (Barony of Clonwilliam)
Marmaduke Green, (c1740 - 1682), of Fermanagh. Marmaduke is the brother of Henry Green (of Fermanagh, Will, 1692) and he married Jane Crichton (Creighton), sister of Col. Abraham Crichton, Crom Castle, Co. Fermanagh. Marmaduke and and Jane are parents to:
1 Captain Abraham Green (d.1724) purchased the forfeited lands of James II, setting up his seat at Ballymacreece, Limerick. Abraham married Annabella Blennerhassett in November 1694, Limerick. Annabella is a brother to Gerald Blennerhassett, father of Rachel Blennerhassett, who married Daniel Heaphy in 1715.
Abraham and Annabella had no children, so the inheritance of Ballymacreece, went to his nephew Henry Green, (1684 - 1745) son of Rev. William Green and Elizabeth Newburgh.
2 Rev. William Green (b. Abt 1655) married Elizabeth Newburgh in 1682. Elizabeth Newburgh, is the sister of Col. Brockhill, Dorothy & Rebecca Newburgh, of Newbridge, Meath. William Green and Elizabeth Newburgh had the following four children (Betham, 1719):
i Henry Green (1684 - 1745) was born in Fermanagh and was high sheriff there in 1721. Henry moved to Limerick to take up ownership of the lands at Ballymacreece, which he inherits from his uncle, Captain Abraham Green, merchant, Limerick. Henry was the High Sheriff of Co. Fermanagh in 1721 (Ref: Crossle Genealogical Abstracts). Henry married in 1714 to his first cousin, Letitia Pockrich/Pockeridge, daughter of Richard "Porrets" Pockrich and Dorothy Newburgh (sister to Elizabeth Newburgh, mother of Henry Green). Henry and Letitia had three known children:
Abraham Green, born about 1715, the eldest son of Henry. He married Honora Piers (dau of William and niece of William Piers, died 1751, of Portarlington) in 1739, and had the following children:
Henry Green, born about 1742. Died 1765, aged 20. Guardian of Henry was awarded to William Ryves, along with Henry's two sisters, Letitia and Elizabeth (Ref: Betham Genealogical Abstracts).
Letitia Green, born about 1743, she married John Armstrong, of Farney Castle, Offaly, in 1770.
Elizabeth Green, born about 1745, she married James Barry, of Cork, in 1765. Elizabeth and James are the parents of
Major Henry Green Barry (1770 - 1838).
Both Abraham and Honora Green must have died young, as on the death of Henry in 1765, he is referred to as a minor and William Ryves is the guardian of Elizabeth and Letitita, minors, the children. Another reference for Henry Green Jnr Esq., administration granted to Elizabeth Green, the eldest sister, next of kin, Feb 1765.
William Green, born 1721 (Ref: TCD, Irish Genealogical Research Society). Married Catherine Massy, 03 Feb 1746, COI, Rathkeale. Catherine is the daughter of William Massy (1680 - 1768) and Anne Bentley of Stoneville, Rathkeale. William Green was registered as a Freeholder, in 1761, Ballymaceece, Limerick. From the will details following, it appears the couple did not have any living children. Will dated 1775 with details:

i Hester Martin/Morton
(Miss Green, who married Mr. Winslow) - Marmaduke's will only states that there were 3 sons and 1 daughter, so it unclear of this relation.

There is deed - Reg. of Deeds, 12-288-5094, dated 05 November 1714 by Nicholas Green, and Mary Denny of Tralee, widow of Edward Denny and Edward Denny, son of Mary, regarding lands at Doneraile, and Fermoy, Cork.

Harvey family of Rathkerry, Cloontabanniff, & Connolly, Ennis, Co. Clare begins with a Robert Harvey, born about 1750, who marries Ellinor Fitzgerald in 1773 (Ref: Killaloe Marriage Licence Bonds). Robert and Ellinor had eight sons and four daughters (1 unknown), as per details of a case, Westby V Harvey (Ref: Clare Journal and Ennis Advertiser, 1851) as follows:

(6) John Fitzgerald Harvey, born about 1792, who was referenced in a case of Westby V Harvey (Ref: Clare Journal and Ennis Advertiser, 1851), where his father Robert Harvey had held a lease of lands at Rathkerry, for three lives, from William Westby, dated 18th of December 1801. On the lease, John Robert Harvey is referenced as the fifth son of the late Robert Harvey, and this is what created the confusion as to whether this son was alive or dead. It was John Fitzgerald Harvey that came forward to claim the third life of the lease, however the court set out to prove that it was John Robert Harvey who was the fifth son or if it were John F Harvey. Evidence from various members stated that there was a John Robert, who had died young. In proving the third life of the lease still existed and it was also noted, that in 1801, John (F or R) Harvey was aged nine years. A Daniel Cahill spoke at the trial that he knew the Harvey family well and of the six sons of Robert Harvey, and that there was only one John Harvey, who since became known as John Fitzgerald Harvey. However, both sisters of John F; Ellen and Deborah, along with one of the brother in-laws (Denis Moloney) stated there was a John Robert Harvey, who died young, in addition to another Maurice Harvey, giving eight sons and three daughters of Robert Harvey. The case was adjourned and the results at present are unknown. The case also revealed that John Fitzgerald Harvey was in the printing business.

The Parkinson family arrived in Co. Clare in the mid to late 1700s, with one branch associated with living at Broomhill House, Kilrush. Broomhill House, built 1680, has been described as being 'very old, built before the town of Kilrush' [Source: Hugh Weir]. Prior to Robert Parkinson occupying Broomhill, the house and lands at Moyne were in occupation by the Comyn family (Lawrence & Jane) with the following notices, including the will of Lawrence, dated 23 May 1800:
Limerick Gazette 25 December 1807. Marriage. A few days ago at Garruragh, County Clare, William Borough Esq., of the Royal Navy to Miss Comyn, daughter of Lawrence Comyn, Esq., of Broom-hill in said county.

The following Parkinsons' are of Kilrush, Co. Clare.
1 Robert Parkinson (1777 - 1841) of Broomhill House, Kilrush and later of Moyne, Kilrush. Clare, possibly through the marriage with Elizabeth Butler in 1797. In 1807 (Ref: Registry of Deeds 607-137-415431) Robert Parkinson demised lands to Michael Brew of Leadmore, Kilrush. The Pilkingtons were an English Protestant family, who originated from Lancashire, with Richard Pilkington, the first of the family to settle in Ireland, in Westmeath and Offaly in the late 17th century. This was the beginning of family in Ireland and the establishment of Pilkington at Tore House, Co. Westmeath. According to Burke’s Landed Gentry Richard Pilkington acquired ‘extensive property’ in Westmeath and King’s County (Offaly) at the end of the 17th century and settled at Rathgarrett or Tore (Ref, Landed Estates).
Another branch, although researchers have stated is not a direct branch to the Lancashire family, the Pilkington family of this branch were associated with Gower Hall, Kilrush, Clare [See Thomas & Francis Pilkington at end of this page].The Pilkington's purchased lands in Co Clare in early 1700s and the family began to establish themselves. They were land free holders and held vast estates in Co Clare and associated with Ballykett House Estate, Kilrush, formally the residence of the Hickman family, Gower Hall, where Richard Pilkington was there in 1805 and Water Park House, Ennis where Thomas Pilkington and his wife Anne Keane lived.
According to a Pilkington family history by Fr. Niall Hayes, the Pilkingtons had several holdings. Church records in relation to births, marriages and deaths support this and include evidence of estate holdings the Pilkington family maintained. The holdings are recorded as:
Ahaga, Kilmihil
Knockalough, Kilrush
Termon, Kilrush
Ballykett, Kilrush
Newtown West, Kilrush
Rahaniska, Kilrush
Baunmore, Kilrush
Associated with Gower, there is Francis, Thomas, Pyne, along with Susanna and Sarah Pilkington.
Francis and Thomas Pilkington are both referenced in the Limerick Chronicle in 1783, for the advertising of the estate of George Quin, of Quinsborough, held in part by James Guthrie, along with Thomas & Francis Pilkington.

The Vokes family are a well associated Limerick family, with the first record of Edward Vokes living in Limerick in 1703. With suggested French connections from the De Vaux family whose name they changed to Vokes, the family quickly made a name for themselves in business and law. Through successful marriages the family also inherited land and property but their main pursuit has always been as merchants.
George Vokes, born circa 1660, married Catherine Evans and had two known sons: Simon Vokes (M. Angel), and Thomas Vokes. Catherine Evans was the sister of Simon Evans (D.1722 - M. Elinor - D.1726) and Elinor Evans (M. Richard or Francis Taylor). Thomas Vokes, son of George and Catherine is the father of:
Edward Vokes (M.Catherine Campbell), William Vokes (M.Martha), Joseph Vokes, George Vokes and Thomas (Elder) Vokes (1710 - 1785)
It is not clear if Thomas (Elder) Vokes (1710 - 1785) is the son of Thomas Vokes, or the son of William and Martha Vokes, who also had a Thomas Vokes born around the same time, who was an attorney and moved to Craigbeg, Limerick . Thomas (Elder) had three known children: John Vokes, Andrew Vokes and Miss Vokes - who married Raymond Evans. [See Evans Family].

Sir William Barker, 3rd Baronet, married Mary, daughter of Valentine Quin of Adare, county Limerick and it was their grandson, Chambré Brabazon Ponsonby, who inherited the Barker estates and assumed the name Barker.
Sir William's father, also Sir William Barker was embroiled in a major land fraud case that first began in 1665 when following a meeting at the Kings Palace at Hampton's Court, London, Thomas Ormand (Lord Ormond) the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was informed of a great land fraud concerning 15,555 acres that centred around Sir William Barker who was illegally in possession of the land. The case went on for many years effecting the property of Barker both in Ireland and England to which he lost. His son, Sir William continued on the case, attempting to buy back the lands which they always stated were legally theirs. He was successful, however he was outbid by Thomas Ivers. Barker held the lands in the barony of Pubblebrien as the family had held since the Cromwellian period. A PDF file is available for further reading on this 17th century land fraud case.
It was though the marriage of Thomas Vokes and Elizabeth Barker that the Vokes are associated with Cragbeg Estate, Limerick, however it is their son, Thomas Vokes "the younger" who may have been the first Vokes to live there following his marriage to Susanna Philips in January 1767, however this branch of the Vokes family were associated with the Legal Industry. The Cragbeg Estate has an imposing four story mansion, however the Vokes lost title to the estate in 1816, however may have kept a small portion of it becoming known as Kilcolman.
